Tomcats suffer a pair of 1-run losses to Bison

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BETHANY, W.Va. – The Thiel College softball team suffered a pair of one-run Presidents' Athletic Conference losses on the road Tuesday to the Bethany Bison.
 
In the first game, Thiel held an 8-4 lead after 6 1/2 innings, but Bethany struck for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 9-8 victory.
 
The Bison eked out a run in the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the Tomcats exploded for six runs in the fifth frame. Sophomore catcher Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) highlighted the inning with a 2-RBI double to left field. Right fielder Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) also laid down a bunt single for an RBI in the inning while shortstop Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley) knocked in a run with a double to left field.
 
Thiel extended its lead to 7-1 in the top of the sixth when Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty). Bethany came back in the bottom of the sixth with a trio of runs to cut Thiel's lead down to 7-4.
 
In the seventh, Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland)'s single through the left side of the infield scored Rable to give the Tomcats an 8-4 lead, but the Bison rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the win, 9-8.
 
Callahan pitched the first six innings for the Tomcats. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Kelsey Bish earned the win in 2 1/3 innings of relief. She allowed two runs, both unearned, on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
 
Second baseman Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) led the Tomcats at the plate in the first game with two hits in three at-bats. Marissa Bosley and Kayla Kelly led the Bison with three hits apiece.
 
Everett put the Tomcats up 1-0 in Game 2 when she doubled through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Masters from second base.
 
Bethany came right back, tying the game 1-1 in the top of the third on Bosley's RBI-single to second base.
 
Thiel came close to scoring the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, but Emily Jump got out of a 2-out jam with runners on second and third with a groundout to second base.
 
Jump went on to knock in the game-winning run for the Bison in the seventh inning when her double to left field scored Jessica Kusnierz from second base.
 
Massengill led Thiel with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate in the second game. Jump and Bosley both recorded two hits for Bethany.
 
Jump earned the win in Game 2. She allowed one earned run on seven hits. Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) suffered the loss. She gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits.
 
The Tomcats (3-11, 0-2 PAC) will return to action Thursday when they travel to Monaca, Pa. to take on Penn State-Beaver. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
