Thiel baseball sweeps Bison

Box Score BETHANY, W. Va. – The Thiel College baseball team picked a perfect time to snap a three-game losing streak. Under frigid cold conditions, the Tomcats took two games from the Bison in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 3-1 victory in game two at Bethany Park.

Thiel (9-8, 4-1) combined an outstanding pitching effort from senior Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) and a big hitting day from seniors Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) and Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) to take down the host Bison (3-10, 1-7). The Tomcats out-hit their opponents by an eight-to-four margin en route to the win.

Things started well for the home team as Farley began the game with a double down the right field line. After King walked, Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) roped a double for the game's first run. Freshman first baseman Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) followed with an RBI-groundout that moved his team ahead 2-0.

The Bison picked up their only run in the bottom of the third when Derek Miller doubled to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved Miller to third, and an error on a ball hit to third made it 2-1.

With the Tomcat defense continuing to post zeros against the potent Bison bats, a pair of errors in the top of the seventh undid Bethany. Farley led off the frame with a one-out single and King reached on an error by the Bison third baseman to give Thiel runners on the corner. Steininger was next up, and rolled a grounder to the third baseman for what appeared to be a double play. However, the throw to second went into center field, and Farley scored to make it 3-1.

Northcott put together one of his best performances of the season to improve to 3-3 and drop his ERA down to 5.06. He scattered four hits and no walks over seven innings, and struck out seven Bison. Zak Kozlowski took the loss for Bethany after giving up all three runs, two of which were earned, over six and a third innings of work.

Farley accounted for over one-third of the Tomcats' eight hits. He finished the day three-for-four with two doubles and two runs scored. King added a two-for-three performance at the dish with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.

The Tomcats return to action tomorrow, April 3, when they host La Roche College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
