Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team racked up 22 hits and 20 runs Thursday en route to a doubleheader sweep over La Roche College. Thiel won the first game 11-1 in six innings before winning the second game 9-0 in five innings.
The sweep was Thiel's second straight in as many days after taking both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday against Waynesburg University.
The Tomcats led 5-0 after its first at-bat in Game 1 Thursday against La Roche.
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) drove in the first run of the game on a RBI-single to center field, and
Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) and
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) followed with 2-RBI singles.
Callahan brought two more runs across the plate in the third frame with a triple. The Redhawks scratched out their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third to cut the Tomcats' lead down to 7-1.
Thiel came back with a run in the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth inning to earn the 11-1 six-inning victory.
Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley) did all the work in the fifth with a leadoff homer. In the sixth,
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) and
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) picked up RBIs, and the Tomcats scored a third run on a La Roche error.
Callahan and Masters both went 3-for-3 in the first game. Masters homered and tripled while Callahan recorded a 2-RBI triple.
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Lea Kronz and Kaylee Zozos paced the Redhawks with two hits apiece.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) earned the win, her second in as many days, to improve to 3-4 on the season. She allowed one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts in six innings.
In Game 2, the Tomcats broke a scoreless tie with a 2-run effort in the top of the second inning. House belted an RBI-double in the frame while Callahan brought in a run on a single.
The Tomcats earned the win in the second game with seven runs on six hits. All seven runs came with two outs. Cheek and Dolan each brought in two runs on RBI-singles while
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland)'s triple also scored two runs. Masters also brought in a run with a three-bagger.
Everett went 2-for-2 with two RBIs while Dolan went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) and Masters both went 2-for-3. Masters recorded an RBI and scored a run.
Callahan earned the win, her second in two days, to improve to 7-5 on the season. She gave up three hits without allowing a run in five innings. She struck out five and walked two. The shutout was Callahan's second of the season.
The Tomcats (12-16, 5-7 PAC) will return to action Saturday when they host the Chatham University Cougars at Tomcat Park. The first pitch of the PAC doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
