Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep Wednesday over the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets at Tomcat Park. The Tomcats won the first game 5-2 before earned the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the second game.
Playing as the visiting team in Game 1, Thiel picked up two runs in its first at-bat of the day.
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) got things started with a leadoff triple to left center field. She scored moments later on
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion)'s RBI-single to left field. Rable later scored Thiel's second run of the game when
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) singled up the middle.
Waynesburg came right back, tying the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first frame on an RBI-double by Katey Potopenko and an RBI-single by Cameron Grimes.
Thiel reclaimed the lead, 4-2, in the fifth inning on RBI-singles by
Madison Cheek (Milan, Ohio/Edison) and
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional). The Tomcats picked up an insurance run in the sixth inning when
Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) scored on a wild pitch.
Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) picked up her second win of the season in the first game of the doubleheader. She pitched all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out three and allowed one walk. Carrie Maier suffered the loss. In seven innings of work she allowed five runs, only four of which were earned, on nine hits. She struck out one batter without issuing a free pass.
Massengill, Rable and Dolan all went 2-for-4 at the plate in the first game.
In Game 2, the Tomcats staked themselves to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, which was highlighted by RBI-singles by
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) and
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland).
The Tomcats extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) scored from third base on Cheek's 2-out single through the left side of the infield.
Waynesburg scratched out two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Tomcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the 7-2 win. Massengill highlighted the inning with a 2-RBI single.
Callahan earned the win in Game 2, her sixth of the season. In seven innings, she allowed two earned runs on eight hits. She struck out four and walked three. Stephanie Kotomski took the loss. She allowed seven runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits.
In addition to earning the win in the second game, Callahan also got it done at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance that included two runs scored. Jasmine Blackwell and Haley Payne paced the Yellow Jackets with a pair of hits apiece.
The Tomcats (10-16, 5-7 PAC) will return to action Thursday when they travel to Pittsburgh to face La Roche. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
