Callahan tosses five-inning one-hitter against Geneva

Amanda Callahan threw a five-inning one-hitter against Geneva College Saturday, leading Thiel to an 8-0 win.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Saturday on the road against Geneva College. Geneva won the first game, 10-3, but the Tomcats rebounded to win the second game in five innings, 8-0.
 
Thiel struck first in Game 1 with three runs in the top of the second inning. Shortstop Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley) led off the inning with a solo homer. Catcher Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) drove in the other two runs in the inning with a 2-RBI single that scored Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) and Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch).
 
Geneva came back, slicing Thiel's lead down to 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Golden Tornadoes went on to earn the 10-3 win with an 8-run effort in the sixth frame.
 
Massengill led the Tomcats at the plate in the first game. She went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. In addition, second baseman Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) went 2-for-4. Samantha Johnson and Elyssa Simko led the Golden Tornadoes with two hits apiece.
 
Johnson was the winning pitcher in Game 1. She allowed three earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter. Allison Williams (Corry, Pa./Corry) took the loss. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in five innings of work.
 
As they did in the first game, the Tomcats took an early 3-0 lead in the second game with a 3-run first inning. Dolan recorded two RBIs in the first inning on a double while Everett brought home the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
Thiel added one run apiece in the second and third innings to extend its lead to 5-0 over Geneva. The Tomcats put the game away with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, which was highlighted by Dolan's RBI-double.
 
Callahan threw a five-inning one-hitter in the second game to improve to 5-4 on the season. She struck out six batters and issued four walks. Andrea Hinds took the loss. She gave up eight runs, only three of which were earned, on 10 hits.
 
Dolan went 3-for-3 in the second game for the Tomcats with a double while Masters went 2-for-3.
 
The Tomcats (8-15, 3-6 PAC) will return to action Monday when they host the Westminster Titans in a single 7-inning PAC game at Tomcat Park. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
