Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – Behind a season-high five-goal performance by
Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central), the Thiel College men's lacrosse team picked up their third straight win with a dominating 17-4 victory over Wilmington College of Ohio.
Papa powered the Thiel offense, which has averaged 18 goals a game over their last three victories, with a season-high five goals on five shots on goal. The seven-point performance for Papa gives him 16 points in the past two games, and 34 on the season. Freshman
Alex Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) finished the game with four goals and an assist for a season-best five points while fellow freshman
Timothy O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) continued his impressive first season at Thiel, adding four goals and two assists to go along with four ground balls.
The Tomcats scored first, as
Alex Casile (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) scored on a pass from O'Shea just two minutes into the first period. The Quakers of Wilmington College answered, tying the contest at 1-1 some seven minutes later on a goal by Alexander Gossard. Thiel went on a 2-0 run to close out the first period, with Casile again scoring on a pass from O'Shea and O'Shea scoring his first goal of the game on a pass from senior
Ray McDonald (Grand Island, N.Y./Wilson Central School) to give Thiel a 3-1 lead at the end of the first. Thiel's lone senior, McDonald was honored during senior day before Saturday's game.
Papa opened the second period with his first goal of the contest, extending Thiel's lead to 4-1 with 11:35 left in the second. After the Quakers cut the Tomcat lead to two with nine minutes left in the period, Thiel scored four unanswered goals to push their lead back to six. The two teams added a goal apiece before the whistle blew to signal halftime, as Thiel took a 9-3 lead to the locker room.
The two teams traded goals at the start of the third period as Papa scored on an assist from
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) to extend the Thiel lead to 10-3. Kirby Dearth answered for the Quakers, trimming the Tomcat lead back to six with 13:18 left in the third. Thiel dominated the end of the period to the tune of four straight goals, with two coming from freshman
Sean Loney (Linthicum, Md./North County).
Casile, Papa and Loney finished the scoring for the high-powered Tomcats offense in the fourth period as they each found the back of the net with the assists going to Ahia and
Zachary Macurak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park).
For the game, Thiel outshot their opponents 45-33 while also going a perfect 15-for-15 on their clearing attempts.
Defensively, Papa led Thiel with a team-high seven ground balls while junior
Taylor Zain (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) caused five turnovers and scooped up four ground balls.
Richard Cannon (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) was solid in net for the Tomcats as he only allowed three goals in 30 minutes of action while making five saves to pick up the win.
The game marked the final regular-season home game for the Tomcats, who will now play four straight road games, the first of which is in Pittsburgh against La Roche College on Tuesday, April 16 at 4 p.m.
