Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team earned its first win of the season Wednesday at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. with a 10-7 victory over Misericordia University.
The Tomcats were behind 6-5 after three innings, but outdistanced the Cougars 5-1 over the final four innings.
The Tomcats went ahead for good, 8-7, in the fifth inning thanks to an
Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley) solo home run and
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch)'s RBI-triple, which brought home the game-winning run.
Freshman third baseman
Amanda Auxier (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) gave the Tomcats a three-run cushion in the sixth inning when she launched a 2-run homer over the left field fence. It was Auxier's first career homer.
Callahan earned the win, her first of the season. She allowed seven runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out four batters and giving up six walks.
Earlier Wednesday morning the Tomcats suffered a tough 8-inning 11-10 loss to Muhlenberg College.
The Tomcats held a 6-4 lead after three innings, but the Mules scored five runs in the fourth to take a 9-6 lead. Thiel fought back, forcing an eighth inning with two runs in the fifth and one run in the seventh.
In the eighth inning,
June Longbine (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore Central)'s RBI-single scored
Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley) to give the Tomcats a 10-9 edge, but the Mules scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win, 11-10.
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) and
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) led the Tomcats in the loss with four hit apiece.
The Tomcats (1-5) will continue play in the NTC Spring Games Thursday with games against Emerson College (9 a.m.) and Marywood University (11 a.m.).
