Thiel falls short in comeback attempt against Denison

Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – After watching the Denison College women's lacrosse squad jump out to a 10-4 halftime lead, the Tomcats played evenly with the Big Red throughout the second half before falling 14-9 Saturday afternoon.
 
Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) scored a team-best three goals and added an assist while Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) registered two goals and an assist.

Denison jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Harrigan scored an unassisted goal at the 26:03 mark of the first half to trim the Big Red lead to one, 2-1. After a Big Red goal pushed the lead to 3-1, Kelley Bellia (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) found the back of the net for Thiel to close the gap, 3-2 with 21:32 remaining. Molly Chapman of Denison scored two consecutive goals shortly after to increase the lead to 5-2, with Harrigan's second goal bringing the Tomcats to within two, 5-3, with 12 minutes remaining in the half.
 
The Big Red of Denison kept on the attack, scoring five goals in the remaining 12 minutes, while only surrendering one- Mahdi's first of the game, to take a 10-4 lead in the half.

Sharr Martin (San Diego, Calif./The Preuss School UCSD)'s first goal of the afternoon on a pass from Harrigan got the Tomcats on the board in the second half, trimming the Denison lead to 11-5. Thiel (0-2) notched five of the second half's first seven scores to pull to within four, 13-9. The Big Red answered with a goal with just three minutes remaining in the contest to seal the win.

Molly Chapman led Denison with four goals and an assist while Erin Keller, Whitney Powel, and Kelsey Wright each posted a pair of goals in the victory. Grace Bodenmann secured the win in goal for the Big Red, making two saves on 12 Tomcat shots.

Asia Wallace (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) made 11 saves in goal for Thiel.

The Tomcats return to action tomorrow when they take on Otterbein University. The match is slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
