Thiel women's lacrosse falls in season opener

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – The women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-9 loss Wednesday afternoon to Allegheny College at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.

Allegheny (1-0) finished with a staggering 45-16 edge in shots and forced Thiel (0-1) into 15 turnovers, causing five.

McKenzie Bell highlighted nine Gators earning points on Wednesday as she finished with five goals and three assists. Kelly Dickson added four goals and four assists while Caren Lee chipped in with three scores. Kelsey Rodgers rounded out the Gator scoring multiple goals, tallying two goals.

In goal, Eliza Morgan picked up her first win of the season, turning back five Tomcat shots.

Thiel had five players earn points in the contest. Beth Snider (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) paced the Tomcats with five points on four goals and an assist. Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) and Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) added to the Tomcats' offensive effort with a pair of goals each while Hannah Stelmach (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) tallied one score.

Abby Spriggs (Westminster, Md./Westminster) turned in a solid effort in goal as she recorded 14 saves in the loss.

The two teams played evenly throughout the first half, as the Gators took a slight 7-5 lead into the break. The Gators scored two unanswered goals at the start of the second half before the Tomcats could add one, a goal by Harrigan on an assist from Snider that brought the score to 9-6. The Gators once again added two more goals before Stelmach's goal made it 11-7 in favor of the “visiting” Allegheny College.

That was, unfortunately, as close as the Tomcats were able to get, as they were outscored 7-2 in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Thiel returns to action on Saturday, when they travel to Granville, Ohio to take on Denison University. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
