Greenville, Pa. — The Tomcat men's tennis team defeated the Wildcats of Daemen College 7-2 on Sunday, September 23
rd. The match was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but the second match had to be cancelled due to the weather.
The Tomcats initially trailed the Division II Wildcats, who were competing for the first time in school history. Thiel dropped two of their three doubles matches to open the match, with the team of
Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) and
Colin McAndrew picking up the lone win in doubles, defeating Greg Lowe and Mike Obermeier 8-3 at number one.
The Tomcats, however, did not trail for long, as they swept through singles play. Parks led things off with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Lowe at number one singles, and McAndrew disposed of Zach Kinniard 6-0, 6-1 at number two singles. With the Tomcats taking a commanding 3-2 lead at that point, Thiel added two more individual victories as Long Zheng defeated Gary Arruda 6-1, 6-1 at number three, and
Logan Sturgeon (Warren, Ohio/Howland H.S.) notched his first victory as a Tomcat, defeating Mike Obermeier 6-2, 6-1 at number four.
The sweep of the singles matches concluded with
Shun Kogai (Tokyo, Japan/) picking up a win over Tom Romero at five singles, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1, while
Shinjiro Todaka (Tokyo, Japan/Hyuga-gakuin ) defeating Alex White in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
The Tomcats will return to action on Saturday September 29, when they road trip with Coach Dunford to Fredericksburg, Va. to take part in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Mary Washington. Players from 31 different schools, four of which were ranked in the Top 25 in 2012, will compete for the singles and doubles championships, with the winners advancing to the ITA National Small College Championships in October.
