LATROBE, Pa. – The Tomcat softball team fell in the final game of the 2012 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Championship to Geneva College by a score of 1-0 on Friday afternoon in Latrobe, Pa.
A great pitchers dual was the highlight of the contest as both Geneva's Julie DiLonardo and Thiel's
Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover) did not allow an earned run in the contest. DiLenardo pitched seven full allowing just two hits while striking out eight in the game. Moreland also pitched a complete game and saw a no-hit bid end in the sixth inning but allowed just one hit while striking out seven.
Thiel threatened first in the bottom of the first inning as
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) notched back-to-back hits in the inning. However, with runners on second and third, DiLonardo got the Golden Tornadoes out of the inning without allowing a run.
Both pitchers would allow only a few base runners over the next few innings until the bottom of the sixth when Moreland allowed her first hit of the contest when Ashley Davis singled following a walk to Christina Fuqua. Then two errors by the Tomcats allowed Geneva to score the lone run of the contest. DiLonardo then shut the door on Thiel in the next two innings and Geneva took the championship 1-0.
For their efforts in the tournament,
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch),
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland), and
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) were all named to the PAC All-Tournament team. The Tomcats finished their season 20-20 and completed conference play with an 11-7 mark.
