CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ken. – The Tomcat softball squad wasted little time in securing the victory it needed to reserve a spot in the 2012 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament, earning a 3-2 game one win over Thomas More College Saturday afternoon. The Saints posted a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
Thiel (18-18, 11-7 PAC), winners of nine of its final 12 regular-season games, traveled to Kentucky with the understanding that one win was needed to clinch a spot in next week's conference championship tournament. The Tomcats will enter the tournament as the number two seed.
Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover) was terrific for the Tomcats on the mound in game one, giving up two runs (1 earned) on eight hits with a season-high nine strikeouts in the complete-game win. Four players finished with two hits for Thiel in the win, with
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) each driving in a run.
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) went hitless in three at-bats, but her one-out, two-on sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh scored
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) to break a 2-2 deadlock and put Thiel up by the eventual final of 3-2.
Callahan fell to 8-8 with the game two defeat, giving up five runs (2 earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. A two-out pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of
Jasmine Turney (New Castle, Pa./Union Area) was the lone hit allowed by Saints starter Ronni Burns. Thomas More managed 12 hits and used four Tomcat errors to scratch out the 6-0 shutout.
The PAC Championship Tournament is slated to get underway on Thursday, May 3 at top-seeded Saint Vincent College.
