Career Day From Mahdi Highlights 19-8 Victory Over Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Tomcat women's lacrosse squad earned their fifth win of the season as they defeated the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg University by a score of 19-8 on Wednesday evening in Waynesburg, Pa.

Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and Carley Cobb both continued their stellar seasons as they each netted a team-high five goals on the day. Mahdi also added three assists in the victory to give her eight total points, which is a season high. They were joined by a four-goal day from Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall); two goals apiece by Kelly Bellia and Jenna Simanovsky (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) and a goal by Simona Davis (Warren, Ohio/Warren Harding), who picked up her first career score in the win.

Thiel jumped on the board first in the first half as Simanovsky notched her first goal of the game to give Thiel the quick 1-0 lead. That was followed by three more goals in the span of two minutes as Mahdi, Cobb, and Harrigan all netted a score between the 26:44 and 25:22 mark of the first half to make the score 4-0.

Thiel would not look back as they would continue to pour on the goals in the first half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 6-3 the rest of the half to go into the locker room ahead 10-3. Thiel would add nine more goals in the second half to give Thiel its highest goal total of the season to defeat Waynesburg 19-8.

With the career-day, Mahdi, who became the first Tomcat in program history to reach 30 goals, now has 39 goals on the year. Cobb became the second Tomcat to reach the 30-goal mark and now sits at 31 goals on the season. Goalie Asia Wallace (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) played all 60 minutes in the net for the Tomcats and stopped nine shots on the way to her fifth victory of the season.

Thiel will finish its inaugural season on Saturday, April 28 when they travel to Washington, Pa. to take on the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
