GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Tomcat softball squad (17-17; 10-7 PAC) split a conference double-header with visiting Washington & Jefferson College on senior day by the scores of 1-6 and 6-4.
In the first game, the Tomcats registered six hits, compared to the Presidents 10.
Leaders for Washington & Jefferson were Sadie Marak, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Erin Shuman went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Chalese Wilson went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Winning pitcher was Madison Rotto who picked up her ninth win of the season throwing a complete came, and allowing six hits, two walks while striking out two.
In the second game, the Tomcats put up four runs in the top of the fourth inning when
Ashley Ames (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Upper St. Clair) hit a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) to score from third.
Morgan White (Warren, Ohio/Champion) kept the inning going with a bunt single down the first base line.
Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) hit a bases clearing triple to deep center field, chasing home three runs to make the score 4-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, Thiel tacked on two more runs when Massengill tripled to right center field. It would mark her eighth triple of the season, which places her first in the Tomcat record book for triples in a season, previously held by Julie Testa who hit seven in 1994.
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) followed Massengill's lead and hit a tripple of her own to chase in Massengill to make the score 6-0 in favor of Thiel
The Presidents threatened their comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning when Stephanie Zur hit a triple to right field, scoring two runs. Rotto singled which scored Zur to make the score 6-3. Paige Delay hit the second triple of the inning that scored Rotta and put the Presidents within two runs.
Thiel managed to hang onto the lead as Callahan (8-7) forced Suhuman to pop up, which Callahan herself put away to preserve the 6-4 victory of the Tomcats.
Betteridge went 1-for-4 with three RBI from the plate while Everett went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Tomcats will finish their conference play when they travel to Thomas More this Saturday, April 28. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
