Women's Lacrosse Falls In Close 8-7 Decision To Oberlin

The Tomcat women's lacrosse team saw an upset bid come up just short as the fell to 11-2 Oberlin College by a score of 8-7 on Tuesday night in Greenville.

Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) led the way once again for the Tomcats (4-7) as she registered three goals in the contest, marking the fifth game of her season, and third in a row where she scored at least three times. Joining her in the scoring column were Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) who scored twice, and Carley Cobb and Kelley Bellia (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) who each scored one a piece.

The Yeowomen of Oberlin looked like they were going to run away with the contest when they scored the first three goals of the game and were leading 3-0 with 20:47 left to go in the first half. Just 20 seconds after Oberlin's third score, Mahdi tallied her first goal of the contest at the 20:26 mark and followed that with her second score at 15:37 to make the score 3-2. Oberlin's Sarah Andrews then scored with 11:36 remaining in the half to give the Yeowomen the 4-2 lead before Harrigan notched her first score to bring Thiel within one at 4-3. Oberlin then used their second three-goal streak in the final two minutes of the half to go into halftime leading the Tomcats 7-3.

Thiel flipped the script in the second half as they came out with the first three goals of the frame, with Harrigan getting her second at 16:52; Cobb netting her first at 15:33 and Mahdi finishing off her hat-trick at 14:56 to pull Thiel within one at 7-6. The Yeowomen's Alic Zicht scored the only goal of the second half for Oberlin at the 8:05 mark but it was just enough to edge the Tomcats as Bellia's first goal of the contest was all the closer Thiel could get and they fell 8-7.

Thiel will next be in action on Saturday April 21 when they travel to Gambier, Ohio to take on Kenyon College. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time.
