Bats Come Alive In Game Two, As Tomcats Salvage Split

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Led by Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) and Ang Masters (Arnold, Pa./Valley), the softball team split a conference double-header with the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg to improve their conference record to 7-5 and overall record of 12-16.
 
It was a pitcher's dual in game one that ended in the Yellow Jackets favor with the score of 1-0. Waynesburg pitcher Carrie Maier pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits, no runs, one walk and striking out four batters.
 
Thiel's Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover) received the loss, allowed five hits, one run and struck out two batters.
 
In game two, the Tomcats wasted no time putting runs on the board. Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) started the inning off with an infield single and was advanced to second when Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) hit to the third baseman and was called safe due to a throwing error. Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) singled, scoring Rable and Betteridge. Danielle Massengille kept the inning going when she hit a single followed by a RBI double from Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland). With Angelina Masters at the plate, she connected for her fifth homerun of the season and clearing the bases, making the score 6-0.
 
Thiel carried their first inning momentum into the bottom of the second when Dolan led the inning of with a double. Massengill hit a RBI single up the middle, which scored Dolan from second. Masters registered her second hit of the game when she hit a single that scored Massengill. Thiel ended the inning with two runs on three hits and extended the lead 8-0.
 
In the bottom of the third, Tomcat Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) hit an infield single to start the inning that was followed by Dolan singling to left field. With Massengill at the plate, she singled to deep right center clearing the bases and putting two more runs on the board for Thiel.
 
The Yellow Jackets scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning when Emily Sorton triple down the right field line but was not enough as the Tomcats won 10-1.
 
Three Tomcats had perfect days at the plate in the second game as Dolan went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Massengill was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Masters went 2-for-2 with four RBI and a homerun.
 
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) picked up her sixth win on the season as she allowed just one run, three walks and retired five batters.
 
Thiel will travel to Oberlin, Ohio to face the Yoewomen in a non-conference game. The first game is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
