HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Tomcat men's lacrosse squad suffered a 16-5 loss at Hilbert College Wednesday afternoon.
Hilbert (4-4) registered the first eight goals of the contest and carried a 7-0 lead into the half.
Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) scored the first Thiel (3-8) goal of the game at the 14:47 mark of the third, and after watching the Hawks extend their lead to 10-1,
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) scored a pair of goals just 1:08 apart to trim Hilbert's lead to seven, 10-3. Zach Macurak scored off of a Papa assist with 5:34 to go in the third to pull Thiel to within six, 10-4.
Hilbert rattled off six goals to close the third and midway through the fourth before Papa tallied his second goal of the game with 3:05 remaining to close out the scoring.
Papa paced the Tomcat offensive effort with two goals and a pair of assists and also added four ground balls. Ahia added two goals and three ground balls while
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) secured 15 saves and six ground balls in goal for the Tomcats.
Sean Purtill led the Hawks with four goals and two assists. Nick Cavalieri chipped in with three goals and an assist while Nick Kieffer finished 11-of-17 in faceoff opportunities. William Wagner totaled 12 saves in net to post the win.
Thiel returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when it hosts Saint Vincent College at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
