GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Tomcat softball squad opened up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a doubleheader sweep at Grove City College Saturday afternoon, winning 10-7 and 3-0. Highlighting the day was
Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover), who registered her first win of the season in the Tomcat's game one win.
In the bottom of the first inning in game one
Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) led off with a walk and advanced to second when
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) laid down a sacrifice bunt. With a runner in scoring position,
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) came through with a single to center, scoring Betteridge to make the score 1-0.
The Tomcats (7-11, 2-0 PAC) added another run in the second when Betteridge tripled down the right field line to score
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) from second.
The Wolverines (11-11, 0-2 PAC) threatened with two runs in the top of the third inning, tying the score 2-2.
Thiel notched three runs in the third as Angelina Masters connected on the first homerun of her career, a three-run shot to left center.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Callahan led things off with a double down the left field line. Betteridge singled to the right side and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Wolverines, which also scored Callahan. With a runner on Everett homered to right center to give the Tomcats a 9-3 lead.
Grove City would make another run in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on four hits and getting within two, 9-7.
Everett's RBI single in the sixth would close out the scoring in game one.
Massengill, Betteridge and Everett each had a terrific opener for the Tomcats. Massengill finished 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a stolen base while Betteridge finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Everett went 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Moreland secured her first victory of the season, striking out eight batters while allowing just one walk in 5.2 innings.
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) was credited with the save, allowing only three hits in 1.1 innings.
The Tomcats would go on to post a 3-0 win in game two.
Once again Thiel scored first, putting three runs on the board in the top of the third. The scoring was keyed by a one-out, two-run double off the bat of
Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional).
Betteridge went 2-for-4 while teammate Dolan finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Callahan pitched a complete-game shutout to earn her third win of the season, allowing three hits while striking out 11.
The Tomcats will continue PAC play on Tuesday, April 3 when they host Bethany College. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 3:30 p.m.
