GREENVILLE, Pa. – After two big wins the day before against Penn State Beaver, the Tomcat softball team (5-11) dropped a pair of games to the Hiram Terriers on a cold Thursday at Tomcat Park by the scores of 9-6 and 10-5.
Hiram jumped on the board first Jessica Bolanz tripled down the right field line, scoring Alee Singer from first. Miranda right would bat in Bolanz from third when she singled to left field to make the score 2-0. The Terriers would tack on another run on errors by the Tomcats to finish the inning 3-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Tomcats responded with four runs of their own when
Danielle Massengill (North Bend, Wash./Mt. Si) hit her third double of the season to left field.
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) followed Massengill with her own RBI double down the right field line. With Angelina Masters at the plate, she cracked one down the left field line to score Everett and hitting the third double of the inning. With the score 3-2,
Amanda Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) was up to bat. Callahan hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty). The Tomcats would get the go ahead run from
Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) when she singled up the middle to make the score 4-3.
Thiel tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but Hiram responded back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Terriers would seal their victory in the top of the sixth inning when the scored three runs on four hits and making the final score 9-6.
In the second game, the bats were hot for the Tomcats as they scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Hiram scored two runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to two 4-2.
Hiram's big innings came in the top of the fifth inning and sixth inning when they scored three runs in each respectively.
The Tomcats did not recover, dropping the second game 10-5.
Offensively, Angelina Masters had a great day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with one RBI. Masters now ranks second in Tomcat history with doubles in a game.
The Tomcats will start conference play this weekend when they travel to Grove City this Saturday to take on the Wolverines in a double-header. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
