GREENVILLE, Pa. – Six different players scored in the Tomcat's 14-4 first ever win over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
Asia Wallace (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) anchored the Tomcat defensive effort with 10 saves in the victory.
Carley Cobb totaled a season-high five goals for Thiel (1-5) while
Emily Harrigan (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) and
Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) each added three.
Tori Williamson (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) added a goal and an assist and
Sharr Martin (San Diego, Calif./The Preuss School UCSD) chipped in with one.
Amanda Baur (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) notched the first goal and assist of her career in first-year head coach
Kati Robbins first win for Thiel.
Thiel finished with a commanding 28-17 edge in shots and a 31-21 advantage in ground balls. The Tomcats controlled 13-of-20 draws and converted on 6-of-9 (.667) free position shots.
Erin Guthall, Jessica Hardman, Ashley Ferguson and Kelly Steen each recorded goals for W.V. Wesleyan (2-8).
Thiel jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Guthall's goal with 12:03 remaining in the opening half brought the Bobcats to within two, 4-1. Baur's goal with 8:49 to play in the first saw Thiel push its lead to 6-1, but Hardman's free position goal with 6:23 remaining prior to the half cut the Bobcat deficit to four, 6-2, heading into the break.
A pair of Cobb goals, along with scores by Mahdi and Harrigan, got the second half underway as Thiel ran its lead to 10-2 with just under 18 minutes to play. Steen's goal at the 16:42 mark halted the Tomcat second-half scoring streak, but three Cobb goals and another by Mahdi lifted Thiel to the 14-4 victory.
The Tomcats return to action on Saturday, March 31 against Olivet College at 3 p.m. Saturday's match will be played at Otterbein College; Thiel will take on Otterbein Sunday at noon.
