GRENVILLE, Pa. — The Tomcat Baseball team used at least one hit from every starting player to have a huge day at the plate and defeat the Terriers of Hiram College 20-6.
In the top of the first inning, Hiram jumped on the Tomcats quickly, putting together three quick runs on a bases-clearing double to give them the 3-0 lead after ½ inning. Not to be outdone, the Tomcats came storming back in the bottom of the frame.
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) led off the inning with a double to right-center, followed by a single by
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler). After back-to-back outs,
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) connected on his first of four hits on the day and drove in Trinch to cut the lead to 3-1.
Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) then singled to center field to score King and make it a one run game at 3-2. After a walk by
Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) loaded the bases, an infield hit by
Nick Ferracano (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), which struck the pitcher, allowed two runs to score to give Thiel the lead at 4-3.
Dan Gainey (Girard, Ohio/Girard) then rounded out the inning with a RBI single that scored Dixon to give Thiel the 5-3 lead.
In the top of the second, Hiram came right back and tied the contest at five, before Thiel took the lead right back in the bottom of the second. After an
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) single, Snyder drove in his second run of the game on an RBI double, and then after stealing third, scored on a throwing error to make the score 7-5.
Thiel would then add another run in the bottom of the third on the second double of the day by Trinch, which scored Gainey to give the Tomcats the 8-5 lead.
After pitcher
Mike Pica (Monessen, Pa./Monessen), kept the Terriers scoreless in the top of the fourth, Thiel once again went to work, notching four runs in the frame, with the highlight coming on a two-run blast to left field by
Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y./Ellicottville), and RBI hits by Farley and Ferracano to make the lead 12-5.
Hiram then made a small dent in the lead in the top of the fifth inning notching one run, before the Thiel scored seven runs in the bottom of the frame. RBIs by Roosa, Snyder,
Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), and Gainey accounted for the first four RBIs of the inning, before Trinch notched his third double of the game with the basses loaded, driving in three runs and ballooning the lead to 19-6.
Thiel added one more run in the contest, as Snyder completed his perfect day with a home run to left-center, making the final score 20-6. The game marked the most runs Thiel had scored in a game since April 30, 2010, when the team posted 23 runs at home against Geneva College.
Thiel, who had eight players register at least two hits, was led by Snyder's 4-for-4 day at the plate. Weston also drove in four runs while scoring four times.
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) finished the day with three doubles and four RBIs. And Roosa (3), Ferracano (3), Farley (2), and Gainey (2) also posted multiple-RBI days.
The Tomcats will start Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Friday March 23 when they travel to New Wilmington, Pa. to take on the Titans of Westminster. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
