GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Tomcat women's lacrosse team was dealt a 10-9 setback by visiting Saint Vincent College Wednesday night at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
Carley Cobb led Thiel (0-2) with a four-goal effort.
Cassy Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel) turned in a tremendous game all over the field, totaling two goals and a pair of assists while aiding the Tomcats with six ground balls.
Tori Williamson (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) added two goals while
Asia Wallace (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) recorded six stops in the loss.
The Tomcats finished with a 26-20 advantage in shots, including a 19-16 edge in shots on goal, while combining for a 20-16 advantage in ground balls. A strong defensive effort was turned in by Thiel, causing five Bearcat turnovers and forcing the visitors into 17 total turnovers.
Hannah Hackman paced Saint Vincent (1-0) with three goals and an assist while Nora Posival and Kaley Burkhardt each added a pair of scores. Jenn Forsyth anchored the Bearcats defensive effort, turning aside 10 Tomcat shots in the victory.
The two programs combined for 15 first-half scores as the visiting Bearcats carried a 9-6 lead into the intermission.
Thiel notched the first two goals of the second with Mahdi netting an unassisted goal at the 22:39 mark to pull to within two, 9-7. Cobb registered her fourth score of the contest on a Mahdi assist with 15:23 remaining to trim the Bearcat lead to one, 9-8.
Maggie Garvey pushed the Saint Vincent lead back to two, 10-8, scoring off of a Molly Snyder assist with just over 15 minutes to play. Williamson's goal with 9:49 remaining saw Thiel once again get back to within one, 10-9, but the Bearcats limited the Tomcats to just one shot following the Williamson score to preserve the one-goal win.
The women's lacrosse squad returns to action on Saturday, March 3 when they play host to Allegheny College (1p.m.)
