GREENVILLE, Pa. – A seven-goal third period helped lift Albion College to a 17-8 victory over Thiel in Friday's 2012 men's lacrosse season opener.
Stephen Treppa had five goals and an assist to lead the visiting Britons (1-0) offensively. Tim Urso added four goals and a pair of assists while Gerard Battersby and Tyler Kilpatrick each added three goals.
Alexander Dziewit totaled eight ground balls while finishing 6-of-8 on face-offs while Battersby and Dan Genord combined for 10 ground balls and went 12-of-18 on face-offs.
Defensively Kyle Formanczyk earned the victory for Albion, notching nine saves.
Carmen Papa (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca Central) and
Francis Ahia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) tallied three goals apiece to pace the Tomcats.
Brent Nicholson (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) and
Kadeem Evans (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) each added a goal while
Thomas Petrullo (Wantagh, N.Y./General Douglas MacArthur) posted two points on a pair of assists.
Ahia and
Zachary Macurak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) each collected five ground balls while
Ryan Weldon (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) posted 19 saves in defeat.
Papa's unassisted score with 9:22 remaining in the second period pulled Thiel even with Albion at 4-4, but goals by Battersby (8:27) and Treppa (7:15) saw the Britons push out to a 6-4 advantage. Nicholson's score with just over four minutes to go until the half saw the Tomcats get back to within one, 6-5, heading into the break.
Ahia third goal of the contest with 10:26 remaining in the third tied the game at 7-7, but the Britons scored the final six goals of the period to take a 13-7 lead into the fourth.
Albion went on to outscore Thiel 4-1 in the fourth to claim the 17-8 win.
The Tomcats (0-1) will return to action on Saturday, February 25 when they play host to Hanover College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
