GREENVILLE, Pa. – In an opening half that featured four goals in span of 12 minutes, the final and most important was tallied in the 95th minute of action as La Roche College's Bryan Weimerskirch scored his second of the contest to lift the visiting Redhawks past Thiel 3-2 Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Thiel (3-3-0) finished with a 15-11 edge in shots (8-7 SOG) while La Roche (4-2-0) managed a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Weimerskirch finished with a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Redhawks offensively, while goalkeeper Michael Brunozzi posted six saves in the win.
Weimerskirch opened the scoring, converting on a Ryan Luffey assist in the 31st minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Thiel's
Tanner Mesing (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) tied the score at 1-1 in the 35th minute, heading in an Erik Gabrick free kick from 34 yards out.
Phillip Ross quickly put the visitors back in front 2-1 in the 37th minute, scoring on a Weimerskirch assist. In the 43rd minute
Matt Thompson (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Admiral Farragut) corralled a
Francis Ahia (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) shot that grazed the crossbar to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the break.
Following a scoreless second half that saw each side take six shots apiece, Weimerskirch's score halfway through the first overtime allowed La Roche to leave 3-2 winners.
Ethan Bayne (Palma Ceia, Fla./H.B. Plant) registered four saves for the Tomcats.
Thiel will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they play host to D'Youville College. The women will take on the visiting Spartans at 1 p.m. with the men's teams scheduled to face off at 3 p.m.
