BETHANY, W. Va. – Behind a brilliant pitching performance by
Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) and a terrific offensive output led by
Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) and
Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut), the Thiel College softball squad concluded its 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) season Monday at Bethany College with a doubleheader split against the Bison. Bethany notched a five-inning 8-0 win in game one before the Tomcats got even with an 8-0 six inning victory in game two.
Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) also secured the top spot on the program's all-time hits list, registering four hits in the doubleheader.
Bethany (27-13, 14-2) broke a 0-0 deadlock in the bottom of the fourth as they scored three and followed with five more in the fifth to secure the 8-0 win.
Chelsea Butler and Angie Varhula each finished 2-3 with three RBI. Emily Jump improved to 15-6 win the win as she allowed three hits with three strikeouts in her 5.0 innings of work.
Davin finished 2-2 for Thiel (11-22, 7-9) in the loss.
In game two House scattered seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in the six-inning shutout, securing her first collegiate victory. Betteridge finished 2-4 with three RBI while Rankin went 1-2 with a two-run homerun and a pair of runs scored.
Danielle Dwyer (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) finished 0-1 with a pair of walks and two runs scored.
House's RBI single in the second, followed by Betteridge's two-run single two batters later, pushed the Tomcats to a 3-0 advantage. After watching
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland) single in the third Rankin launched her third homerun of the season to give Thiel a 5-0 lead. An
Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area) pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth extended the visitor's lead to 6-0, and after scoring on a Bison wild pitch, Betteridge's run-producing single scored Davin from third to conclude the scoring at 8-0.
Davin's 2-3 effort in game two pushed her program-best career hit total to 163, five ahead of Rankin's second-place total of 158.
