Tomcats Battle Saint Vincent to DH Split

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball squad concluded its 2011 home schedule on Sunday, splitting a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with visiting Saint Vincent College. In game one the visiting Bearcats broke an 8-8 tie with a six-run seventh in posting a 14-8 win, while the Tomcats used a three-run third in the second game to secure a 3-2 win.

With game one deadlocked at 8-8 after six innings Saint Vincent (15-11, 5-9) scored their first run of the seventh on a Tomcat fielding error and notched their second on Emily Petrowsky's RBI groundout. Two batters later Sam Shumaker broke the game open with an inside-the-park grand slam and secured Saint Vincent's six-run victory.

Emily Lauterbach picked up the win on the mound for the Bearcats, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Lauterbach replaced starter Shauna Hetrick in the sixth after Hetrick went 5.0 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits.

Shumaker finished 3-4 with four RBI and a run scored while Petrowski finished 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Maria Adams went 4-5 with three runs scored and a RBI.

Tomcat starter Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover) fell to 5-10 on the season with the loss, surrendering eight runs on 13 hits in 5.1 innings. Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) replaced Moreland with one out in the fifth and allowed six runs (4 ER) on four hits in the final 1.2 innings.

Moreland went 2-2 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored to pace the Tomcat offense. Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) went 4-4 with a double, two runs scored, and a RBI. Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) finished 2-4 with two RBI.

With Thiel trailing 1-0 after two Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) stroked a three-run double to left field in the third to give the Tomcats a 3-1 advantage. Shumaker's two-out RBI single in the sixth trimmed the Thiel lead to one, 3-2, but a foulout caught by Rankin behind the plate secured the Thiel win.

Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area) earned the win in the nightcap, allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Rankin finished 1-3 with three RBI while Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) went 2-3 with a run scored to pace the Tomcat offense.

Alyssa Grossman was dealt the game two loss, allowing three runs on five hits while fanning four in 7.0 innings. Grossman and Shumaker each finished 1-3 with a RBI in the loss.

Thiel (10-21, 6-8) concludes its PAC season on Monday, May 2 at Bethany College. The twinbill is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
