Waynesburg Hands Thiel Sixth Straight Loss with DH Sweep

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball squad dropped it sixth-straight contest on Saturday, falling to visiting Waynesburg University 14-6 and 3-1 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader.

Starting pitching for Waynesburg (11-7, 4-2) was terrific in both ends of the doubleheader; Amanda Baughman improved to 4-3 on the season in game one as she allowed six runs (5 earned) on 11 hits with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Carrie Maier evened her season record at 3-3 with the win in game two, allowing one run (1 earned) on six hits with a pair of strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

A Rachel Moon RBI single followed up by a two-run Baughman single gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead midway through the third. A run-scoring single by Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg Area) in the bottom of the fourth scored Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa., Bentworth) and trimmed the visitor lead to two, 3-1.

Waynesburg sent eight batters to the plate in their fourth-run fifth inning and assumed a 7-1 advantage. Thiel (4-17, 0-6) answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Yellow Jackets sent seven to the plate in the visitor half of the sixth and scored three more to extend their lead to 10-3. 

Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) two-run double in the home half of the sixth cut Waynesburg's lead to five, 10-5, before the visitors used a four-hit seventh to plate four more runs and watch their lead swell to 14-5. Rankin's solo home run in the bottom of the seventh closed out the scoring at 14-6.

Baughman finished 3-4 with five RBI to pace the Yellow Jackets' offense. Moon went 3-5 with a double, three runs scored, a stolen base, and a RBI while Amber Pivik finished 3-5 with a double, a RBI and a run scored.

For the Tomcats Davin went 2-3 with two RBI while Rankin and Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa., Franklin Regional) each added two hits and two runs.

Batiz took the loss for the Tomcats, allowing seven runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Ali House (Liberty, Ohio/Liberty) went the final 2.1 innings and surrendered seven runs (4 earned) on eight hits.

In game two the Yellow Jackets used a second-inning, two-run Pivik double to grab a 2-0 lead. A RBI single off of the bat of Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio, Highland) in the third scored Davin after a leadoff triple to get back to within one run, 2-1. The visitors, as they had all day, added another insurance run in the bottom half of the third in securing the 3-1 decision.

Pivik finished 2-2 in game two with a double and three RBI. 

Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio, Dover) suffered the game two loss for Thiel, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Moreland and went 2-3 at the plate.

Thiel is scheduled to return to action on Monday, April 11 when they host Ursuline College at Tomcat Park. The non-conference doubleheader will get underway at 3:30 p.m.
