GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC)-leading Thomas More College softball squad posted a pair of victories Thursday afternoon at Thiel College' s Tomcat Park, earning a 5-1 game one win before securing game two by a 6-3 final.
Samantha Ladenburger improved to 8-4 on the season with the game one win, allowing 1 run (0 earned) on six hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
The Saints (17-9, 6-0) struck first in the third inning as Amanda Minor's RBI single was followed up by run-scoring walks by Stefaney Turner and Alex Walter to give the visitors a 3-0 cushion.
Brittany Wegman's two-run home run in the fourth, her seventh of the season, pushed Thomas More's lead to 5-0. Thiel (4-15, 0-4) scratched out its only run in the bottom of the frame with Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa., Bentworth) scoring on a Saints' miscue to close the game scoring at 5-1.
Minor and Dana Bors each finished 2-4 at the plate, while Bors and Wegman each scored twice.
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio, Highland) went 2-3 to pace the Tomcat batters. Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg Area) fell to 2-7 on the season, allowing five runs (5 earned) on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and six walks in 7.0 innings.
In game two Thomas More again assumed the lead early, plating a pair of runs in the second on a two-run single by Angie Sandmann. The Tomcats pushed a pair of runs through in the fourth to cut the visitor's lead to one, 3-2, but the Saints added two more in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead over the Tomcats to three, 5-2.
Rankin scored for Thiel in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch to get back to within two, 5-3, but Thomas More again answered in the bottom of the frame as Sandmann's RBI single scored Turner to close out the scoring.
Bors moved to 5-1 with the game two win, allowing three runs (2 earned) on five hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Sandman finished 3-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.
Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio, Dover) dropped to 2-8 on the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 6.0 innings. Jackie Belsito (Bedford, Ohio, St. Peter Chanel) had two of the Tomcats' five hits in the game two loss.
Thiel returns to action on Saturday, April 9 when it hosts PAC rival Waynesburg University at Tomcat Park. Game one is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
