GREENVILLE, Pa. – With a standing-room only crowd on hand for the yearly battle between Mercer County and Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rivals Thiel College and Grove City College, the Tomcats managed to earn a twinbill split with the visiting Wolverines Saturday afternoon at Tomcat Park. The homestanding Tomcats registered a 4-2 win in game one, but a five-run third inning in the second game helped the visiting Wolverines post a 9-1 (6 inn.) victory in the finale.
With the score deadlocked at 0-0 after three frames the visitors scored on a two-out Casey Schmidt sacrifice fly to assume a 1-0 lead. Thiel (9-20, 5-7) notched a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame and took a 2-1 lead.
The Tomcats added runs in the fifth and sixth innings and carried a 4-1 lead into the seventh. Emily Reese's two-out, pinch-hit RBI double scored Grace Murtoff to pull Grove City (17-15, 6-8) back to within two, 4-2, but an Elizabeth Covatto lineout would end the threat, preserving the Tomcat victory.
Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover) earned her fifth victory of the season, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. The Tomcats combined for 10 hits as
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion),
Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), and Moreland each finished with two hits apiece.
With her two hits Davin's season hit total moves to 33 and moves her into second place on the Tomcats' career hits list with 154, passing Tammi Hassell (153, 1999-2002).
Lauren Clarke suffered the loss for Grove City, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. Faith Jentsch threw the final 1.0 inning and allowed two hits.
Game two was a different story with the Wolverines, after a pair of scoreless innings to start the contest, plating five runs in the third and two more in both the fifth and sixth innings to earn the shortened 9-1 win.
Lauren Pennell threw 6.0 innings in securing the win, striking out a pair while allowing just one run on three hits. Schmidt finished 3-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored while Amanda Sheppeck and Murtoff each managed a pair of hits and a RBI.
Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area) was dealt the hard-luck loss in game two as she allowed nine runs (4 ER) on 10 hits with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The Tomcats combined for just three hits.
Thiel will host Saint Vincent College for a PAC doubleheader on Sunday, May 1. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
