Davin Goes 5-6 in DH Sweep of Chatham

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball squad earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep Thursday against visiting Chatham University by final scores of 4-2 and 6-5. Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) finished 5-6 at the plate with a double, a triple, a stolen base and two runs scored.

Thiel (6-17, 2-6) received a pair of superb pitching performances from Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio, Dover) and Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg Area). In game one Moreland limited Chatham (8-9, 2-4) to two runs (1ER) on six hits with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Batiz allowed five runs (4ER) on nine hits while fanning nine in 7.0 innings in the Tomcats' game two victory.

Tied 2-2 with one out in the bottom of the sixth a run-producing triple off of the bat of Danielle Dwyer (Dalton, Ohio, Dalton) scored Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa., Bentworth) to give the Tomcats a 3-2 edge, and after a throwing error on the Cougars Dwyer was also able to score and close out the scoring.
Davin was one of three Tomcats to finish with two hits. Dwyer went 2-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored while Rankin went 2-3 with a run scored.

Jenna Dunlay was dealt the loss in game one, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. Six different Cougars finished with one hit. Alex Miklos was 1-2 with a double, RBI, stolen base, and run scored.

Chatham tied the night cap at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a passed ball and a throwing error. Thiel regained the lead in the top of the sixth, using RBI singles from Batiz and Ashley Dolan (Export, Pa., Franklin Regional) to jump back in front 4-2. 

Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio, Conneaut) and Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio, Highland) each had run-producing singles in the top of the seventh and provided the Tomcats with a four-run cushion (6-2) heading into the bottom of the frame. With two outs Elise Zavadak's RBI single scored Olivia Traini before Jenn Stefano's two-run double scored Traini and Anais Popojas to trim the Tomcat lead to just one, 6-5. After walking Barb Petty to push the game-tying runner into scoring position Batiz was able to induce a fly ball and register the final out of the contest.

Davin went 3-4 with a triple, a run, and a stolen base while Batiz certainly helped her own cause, finishing 4-5 with a RBI. Everett went 3-5 and drove in her team-high 19th RBI of the season.

Zavadak finished 3-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored to pace the Cougar offense. Stefano also added a pair of RBI.

Thiel is set to return to action on Saturday, April 16 at PAC rival Washington & Jefferson College. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
