GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's tennis team earned its first win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating visiting Mount Aloysius College 5-4.
The win was not only the first for Thiel (1-10) since April 19, 2006 (program was discontinued for four seasons following the 2006 season), but was also the first collegiate victory for first-year head coach Tim Dunford.
The Tomcats picked up individual wins at second and third doubles and fourth, fifth, and sixth singles.
In second doubles
Louie Rubin (Lock Haven, Pa., Central Mountain) and
Zach Kubec (Geneva, Ohio, Geneva) defeated Chris Cielo and Matt Pratt 8-1 while
Kirt Strock (Zanesville, Ohio, Tri-Valley) and
Josh Bartsch (Pittsburgh, Pa., The Kiski School) downed Wes Stoudnour and John Feltch 8-2 at third doubles.
Kubec posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jake Herschberger at fourth singles and
Naoki Osawa (Ota Gumma, Japan, Jyutoku) defeated Stoudnour 6-3, 6-1 at fifth singles. The sixth singles match between
Brad Schell (Linesville, Pa., Conneaut) and Jesse Naill provided the most entertainment as Schell rallied from a first-set loss to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.
Thiel is set to return to action on Thursday, April 14 when it plays host to Westminster College. The match is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
