HIRAM, Ohio –
Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg Area) picked up her first win of the season for the Tomcat softball squad in game two of Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader at Hiram College. The Tomcats were dealt a 6-0 loss in game one before Batiz tossed a three-hit shutout in the 8-0 (5 inn.) victory.
Hiram (11-5) saw their first five batters reached base safely in the bottom of the first and took a 5-0 lead heading into the second inning. The Terriers notched their sixth and final run in the sixth inning on a Sarah Loyer RBI single.
Alyssa Lane improved to 4-1 on the season for Hiram, allowing just three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The Terriers had four players contribute two hits apiece (Loyer, Kristen Cooney, Kelly Langland, Alexandra Singer) with Jessica Bolanz finishing 1-2 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio, Dover) suffered the loss for Thiel (2-11), allowing six runs (2 earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) finished 2-2 at the plate to pace the Tomcat hitters.
Batiz allowed just three hits to go along with seven strikeouts in her five-inning, game two win. She also supported her own cause at the plate, going 2-2 with two RBI and a run.
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio/Highland)'s (Medina, Ohio, Highland) two-run single in the first, followed by a Batiz RBI sacrifice, provided the Tomcats with a 3-0 advantage heading into the home half of the first.
Following a Davin double
Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio, Conneaut) tripled home Davin and scored on a Terrier throwing error, giving Thiel a 5-0 lead.
In the third frame a Batiz RBI single scored
Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa., Bentworth) to put the visitors up 6-0 and a two-out, two-run Davin single pushed Thiel ahead 8-0.
Everett, Davin, and Batiz each finished with two RBI apiece while Rankin went 2-3 with two runs scored.
Thiel returns to action on Thursday, March 31 at La Roche College. The non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
