MONACA, Pa. – The Thiel College softball squad split a non-conference double header with Penn State Beaver Saturday afternoon, dropping game one by a 7-6 decision before registering a 3-0 shutout win in game two.
Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio, Dover) earned the game two victory, allowing just a pair of hits while posting a career-high 11 strikeouts.
Thiel (1-11) carried a 6-3 game one lead into the sixth inning, but a four-run frame, keyed by Alyssa Carver's one-out, two-run double, helped Penn State Beaver secure the 7-6 come-from-behind win.
Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg Area) fell to 0-6 on the season for Thiel, allowing seven runs on eight hits with seven walks. Batiz struck out 13 in the loss, tying her performance against LaRoche College last season at home on March 24. She struck out a career-high 18 batters against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany College on April 25, 2009.
Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio, Champion) went 4-4 in game one with a RBI and run scored while
Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio, Conneaut) finished 2-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
Molly Jo Everett (Medina, Ohio, Highland) had three hits and also scored twice.
For Penn State Beaver Lauren Pier finished 2-3 with two runs while Carver went 1-2 with two runs, two walks, and three RBI. Kayla Chambers picked up the game one win, allowing six runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts and zero walks.

Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa., Bentworth) solo home run in the bottom of the second gave Thiel a 1-0 advantage before a
Danielle Dwyer (Dalton, Ohio, Dalton) two-run blast in the fourth pushed the Tomcats' lead to 3-0.
Moreland secured her first victory of the season Saturday as she limited Penn State Beaver hitters to just a pair of hits.
Alyssa Carver suffered the game two loss for Penn State Beaver, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two bases on balls.
Thiel is expecting to play its 2011 home opener on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 as they host Oberlin College. The non-conference double header is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Tomcat Park.
