GREENVILLE, Pa. — After reinstating the men's tennis team, Thiel recently opened its season with its first match since 2006, falling to Baldwin-Wallace 9-0.
The Tomcats also dropped their second match to D'Youville, but did pick up the season's first individual victory in the 8-1 loss as Jian Long Zehng won in come-from-behind fashion at No. 2 singles. Zheng dropped the first set to C.J. Schummer, 2-6, before bouncing back with 6-3, 6-2 wins in the final two sets.
The Tomcats will look to improve under first-year head coach Tim Dunford as the season progresses. Their next chance will be an away match against Pitt-Bradford on Saturday.
Thiel's schedule will have 18 matches, including seven in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and one against a Division II opponent, Edinboro University.
Zehng and
Naoki Osawa (Ota Gumma, Japan/Jyutoku) have each taken a turn at the top singles spot, while
Louie Rubin (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) has played at both the second and third singles positions. Other Tomcats to take part in singles are
Matt Hadden (Franklin, Pa./Rocky Grove),
Josh Bartsch (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Kiski School) and
Brad Schell (Linesville, Pa./Conneaut).
