Batiz's Five RBI Day Pushes Thiel to a Split

Beaver Falls, Pa. (May 4, 2010) -- The Thiel College softball team split their Monday doubleheader against the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes, losing the first game, 4-1, while winning game two, 7-4.

In game one, the Golden Tornadoes surged ahead of the Tomcats in the first, after tallying three runs on four hits in the inning.

Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area) went six innings in the losing effort, allowing four runs on 10 hits, while striking out six batters.  Karen Wolfe (Troy, Pa./Troy) and Jackie Belsito (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) picked up a pair of hits a piece, with Wolfe also tallying a run scored.

In game two, the Tomcats once again fell behind early to Geneva, with the Golden Tornadoes posting a run on two hits in the first inning.  The Thiel women battled back in the top of the second, however, with a Batiz sacrifice fly bringing Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) home, tying the score at one run a piece.

In the fourth inning, Thiel pushed past the Geneva women on the strength of a two run single by Batiz, that catapulted the Tomcats to a three run inning and the, 4-1, lead.  The Golden Tornadoes would wait until the last possible second to answer back, however, when Samantha Bautista crushed a two out, three run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings.

Both teams went scoreless through the next two innings, with Rankin finally breaking the stalemate in the 10th on sacrifice fly that scored Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). Two batters later, Batiz put the game out of reach with a two run single.

Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover) picked up her ninth win of the season, going all 10 innings, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits.

Batiz put the Thiel women on her back offensively, tallying two hits, driving in five runs, while scoring one of her own.  Ashley Rable (Warren, Ohio/Champion) and Elise Moore (Apollo, PA/Kiski) contributed a pair of hits each, while Rankin scored two runs and drove in one.

The Tomcats return to action on Wednesday, May 5 when they head to Pepper Pike, Ohio to face Ursuline College in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
