Saints Sweep Tomcat Softball, 3-0, 9-4

CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY (April 6, 2010) – The Thiel College softball team was swept, 0-3 and 4-9, by the Thomas More Saints on Tuesday.

Game one saw Thiel College pitcher, Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area), and Thomas More's, Dana Bors, each provide immaculate performances from the mound, allowing zero runs through the first five innings of play.  The visiting Tomcats would be the first ones to blink in the duel of throwers, however, allowing three runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth.

The Thiel women set the table for extra innings in the top of the seventh, getting a runner on first and second base but, the 'Cat women couldn't get over the hump as they stranded the baserunners and their chances at victory.

Batiz went sixth complete innings in the losing effort, striking out four, while allowing three earned runs on four hits.

In game two, the Tomcats, on the strength of a leadoff home run by Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), jumped out to a one run lead.  The Saints answered back in the top of the second, scoring two runs and added to their lead in the fourth with three more runs.

The Thiel women cut into the Thomas More lead in the sixth, on the back of Batiz's RBI single and Ashley McLiman's RBI double.  Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) also advanced home, providing the Tomcat's third run of the inning.  The Saints would shut the door in the seventh, however, scoring three runs to seal the sweep.

Tomcat senior, Elise Moore (Apollo, PA/Kiski), went 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring three runs.

The women of Thiel softball return to action Saturday, April 10 for a 1 p.m. match up against the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg University.
