McLimans Shutout Powers Thiel to Split

GREENVILLE, PA. (April 28, 2010) – The Thiel College softball team split their Wednesday doubleheader against the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes, picking up the game one victory 3-0, while dropping game two 0-3.

Senior pitcher, Ashley McLimans (Orchard Park, NY/Hamburg), led the way for the Tomcats in game one, throwing a complete game shutout, allowing five hits, while striking out six.

The Tomcats struggled to notch a run until freshman outfielder, Karen Wolfe (Troy, Pa./Troy), bunted in the go ahead score in the bottom of the fourth.  Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) added another run to the lead when she crossed home plate in the same inning, and McLimans helped her own cause in the sixth with an RBI single.

After the game one victory, the Tomcats pushed their record to 12-2 when scoring the first run of the contest.

In game two, the Tomcats and the Golden Tornadoes stalemated at zero through the first two innings of play, with the tie being broken by a LeAnne Abate two-run double in the third to put Geneva up by two runs.

With the addition of an insurance run in the fifth inning, the Thiel women never managed to gain any traction offensively, falling 0-3 in the second game of the day.

Freshman pitcher, Jen Kumar (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview), went five innings, striking three batters, while allowing one earned run on five hits in the losing effort.

Tomcat softball returns to action on Thursday, April 29 when the Grove City Wolverines head to Greenville, Pa. for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
