WAYNESBURG, PA. (April 10, 2010) – The Tomcat pitching duo of Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area) and Kristen Moreland (Dover, Ohio/Dover) led the Thiel College softball team in a sweep over the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets on Saturday, by scores of 2-0 and 9-1.

Batiz was the dominant in game one, throwing a masterful complete game shutout, striking out 11 batters, while allowing only two hits.  The Leechburg lefty has been virtually unhittable in conference play this season, holding PAC opponents to an overall batting average of .153 in 20 innings of work.

The Tomcat offense struggled to manufacture runs throughout the contest but, in the top of the fifth, Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut), knocked in Shea Maier (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) to give Thiel the 1-0 lead, and perennial all-PAC centerfielder, Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), finished the Yellow Jackets off in the seventh, with an RBI double.

Davin finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Britain Callen (Andover, OH/Pymatuning Valley) added a pair of hits and a run scored.

In game two, Moreland picked up where Batiz left off, allowing one earned run on five hits, while notching four strikeouts.

Offensively, the Tomcats finally came alive after an all but stagnant game one, tallying nine runs on 10 hits.  Batiz led the way for the women, going 3-for-4 at the plate, with three RBIs and a run scored, while Jackie Belsito (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) tallied two hits and three RBIs.  Thiel College senior, Stephanie Smith (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), contributed two hits, one of which being a solo home run, and two runs scored.

Next, Tomcat softball heads to Oberlin, Ohio to face the Yeowomen of Oberlin College, Monday, April 12 for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader match up.
