Thiel Men's Soccer Defeats Saint Vincent

Mercer, Pa. – The Thiel College men's soccer team pulled their record to .500 on the season as they defeated Saint Vincent College 4-2 on Saturday in Mercer, Pa.

Thiel (6-6-1, 1-1 PAC) was able to get on the board first when freshman forward Francis Ahia (Penn Hills, Pa., Penn Hills) redirected a ball off of a throw in to freshman forward Rory Duncan (Chardon, Ohio, Chardon) who found the back of the net to make the score 1-0. Just two minutes later Saint Vincent forward Elom Pedanou beat senior keeper Tom Lange (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) on a break to tie the score at 1-1.

Only fifty seconds later, freshman midfielder Spencer Booth (Poland, Ohio, Poland Seminary)scored off of a rebound after a shot by Duncan got away from the Bearcat keeper and the Tomcat lead was 2-1 just eighteen minutes into the game.

Ahia added one more goal in the 38th minute after he received a long lead pass from senior forward Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa., Laurel Highlands) and beat the keeper on the left hand side to make the score 3-1. The teams would go into halftime with the Tomcats holding a two goal edge.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Borland was able to find the net off of a pass from freshman forward Tyler Hanks (Cleveland, Ohio, Olmstead Falls) to make the score 4-1. Saint Vincent came right back on a 25 yard strike from Ben Skvarca to cut the lead to 4-2. The Bearcats could get no closer as Thiel gained their frist vicotory in PAC play.

"It's nice to get our first victory in the PAC" said head coach Andy Hoggarth, who has coached the Tomcats to the most wins in a season in the program's history.

"The guys played well and it was nice to win a scrappy game with hard work and determination."

Thiel will be in action again on October 12 when they travel to Grove City College. The game is set for 3 p.m.
