Borland Lifts Tomcats Past Yellow Jackets

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa., Laurel Highlands), playing in his final soccer match at Thiel, scored once and chipped in with an assist Friday as the Tomcats topped visiting Waynesburg 2-1.

Borland, one of three Tomcats celebrating Senior Night at Alumni Stadium, put his team up 1-0 off an assist from freshman Rory Duncan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) in the 32nd minute. The score remained that way at the end of the half as Thiel goalie Ethan Bayne (Palma Ceia, Fla., H.B. Plant High School) stopped all five shots he faced, including a penalty kick.

Waynesburg (5-13-1, 0-7-0) tied the game 22 minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal by Stephen Zimmerman. The game looked as if it might go to overtime but Borland and Duncan struck again, this time Borland with the assist and Duncan with his team-leading 11th goal of the season. The goal puts Duncan's freshman campaign in the record books as the second-highest goals by a Thiel player in one season. His 28 points are also the second highest Tomcat single-season total.

Bayne finished with nine saves, including some crucial stops with a tie score late in the game.

Borland, who finished the season with five goals and three assists, was joined in the Senior Night celebration by Andrew Dyson (Herminie, Pa., Yough) and Naoki Osawa (Ota, Gumma, Japan, Jyutoku).

With the win, the Tomcats completed the most successful season in program history with an overall record of 8-10-1 and a Presidents' Athletic Conference mark of 3-4.
