Batiz Dominates in Thiel Split

Greenville, Pa. (April 8, 2009) -- Not even the cold weather of Greenville could cool off sophomore pitcher, Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area), who shut the the visiting Waynesburg Yellowjackets down in route to splitting Wednesday's Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Thiel picked up the victory in game one, outdueling the Yellowjackets1-0, but couldn't maintain the momentum in game two, dropping the contest 6-8.

It didn't matter that only three Tomcats could make contact with the ball in game one due to Batiz' virtuoso pitching performance.  Over six innings of work, the "Lefty of Leechburg" struck out 11, allowed two hits and gave up zero runs.

Batiz now ranks second all-time in Thiel College history in single game strikeouts, after her 11 K carving of Waynesburg.

Yellowjackets pitcher, Autumn Minor, was every bit as lights out as Batiz but, her one hiccup came in the fourth inning when she gave up a triple to sophomore outfielder, Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), who later went on to score the only run of the game.

Game two saw the Thiel bats come alive with Elise Moore (Apollo, PA/Kiski) going 3-for-3 at the plate and two RBI's and Stephanie Smith (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) tallying two hits and two RBI's.  But, it proved to be for not, as the Tomcats came up a short in the second contests.
