The Day of the Tomcat

Greenville, Pa. (April 11, 2009) -- The Thiel College softball team displayed offensive firepower reminiscent of a football team on Saturday, as they swept the Chatham College Cougars, 14-0 and 21-5.

The Tomcats combined for a 36 hits over the duration of the two contests, with every player who had atleast two at bats getting a hit.

Offensively the Tomcats were lead by catcher, Britain Callen (Andover, OH/Pymatuning Valley), who tallied five hits and knocked in a total of nine RBI's over the course of the doubleheader.  Sophomore centerfielder, Laura Davin (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), wouldn't be outdone as she went 7-of-9 at the plate with seven runs scored and four RBI's, while thirdbase ace, Becky Betteridge (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut), finished the day 5-of-8 with three RBI's and four scored runs.  Hitting phenom, Melissa Rankin (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth), continued her outstanding season at dish going 6-of-9, knocking three RBI's and scoring three runs.  Haley Germano (Sharpsville, PA/Sharpsville) and Stephanie Smith (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) both contributed three hits to the affair, to go along with scoring three and four runs respectively.

Sophomore pitcher, Emily Batiz (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg Area), continued her lights out week of pitching by striking out 11 of the 17 batters she face, while allowing one hit in route to her first shutout of the season.  This is the second time in as many games Batiz has hit the 11 strikeout mark, giving her the highest number of K's in a two game span in Tomcat history.  For the week, Batiz has allowed a total of two hits, zero earned runs, and has struck out 22 batters.

The women of Thiel will return to action April 14 when they make the trek to Washington, Pa. to face the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson.
