GREENVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2008) – The Thiel College men's soccer team opened its season in style Tuesday, winning a, 4-0, decision against Penn State Beaver at Alumni Stadium.
Thiel, which debuted new home uniforms in the match, opened the scoring in the contest's second minute on an unassisted tally by sophomore Chad Swisher (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance). Freshman Jordan Gasprovic (West Mifflin/West Mifflin), freshman Darwin Porras (Miami, Fla./) (Miami, Fla.), and senior Robert Glass (Greenville/Greenville) (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) would each add insurance goals in the first half to set the final.
The Penn State Beaver defense tightened a bit in the second stanza, shutting out the potent Tomcat offense while allowing six shots, four of which were on goal. On the day, Thiel outshot Penn State Beaver, 13-4.
Junior keeper Tim Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned a shutout in his first outing, being called upon to make three saves in the match.
Senior Elliot Wreh-Wilson (Edinboro/General McLane) (Edinboro/General McLane), Porras, and sophomore James Wehrheim (Corry/Corry) (Corry, Pa./Corry) each registered an assist in the victorious effort.
Thiel (1-0) travels to Pitt-Greensburg tomorrow for a 5 p.m. match.
