GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2008) – Washington & Jefferson's Mike Pappas scored the game-winner Wednesday afternoon to turn aside a determined Thiel College men's soccer team, 2-1, in a game which looked as if it were destined for overtime.
Pappas' 67th-minute shot sailed past the fingertips of a diving David Rafle (Edinboro/General McClane) (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) by about six inches.
Prior to that point, Thiel and the Presidents' played a relatively even match – trading a pair of first half goals – despite a 12-5 W&J advantage in shots.
Jeremy Delmaster drew first blood in the contest, firing an unassisted tally at the 16:10 mark. Thiel's Chad Swisher (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) piped a sturdy blast set up by a Matt Brannon (Winchester, Va./John Handley) (Winchester, Va./John Handley) assist barely 13 minutes later.
Rafle had a solid game in goal for Thiel, making five stops.
Thiel (5-11-1; 1-5-0 PAC) returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 29 when it hosts Geneva at 3 p.m.
