Beau Smith is in his third season as Thiel’s assistant baseball coach. He was named an Associate Scout with Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals in 2014.
Smith has been key in the development of the Tomcat pitching staff. In 2015, Thiel led the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in strikeouts and saves and finished third in the conference in earned run average. In 2014, Thiel finished third in earned run average and strikeouts. In Smith’s two full years as coach, he has had four All-PAC pitchers and a player named to the D3Baseball.com All-Region team and the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team.
Smith came to Thiel after serving as a volunteer assistant coach with his alma mater, the University of Mount Union, during the 2013 season. While with the Mount Union Purple Raiders, Smith coached the pitching staff, including Zach Carlino, the recipient of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Kent Tekulve Pitcher of the Year. Smith helped lead the Raiders to their second ever OAC title and first since 1970. The Raiders also made their first ever NCAA Regional appearance in 2013.
Smith had a successful playing career prior to becoming a coach, earning three varsity letters at Mount Union from 2010-12. In his three seasons as a pitcher for the Raiders he twice led the team in appearances and complete games, and he was top three in innings pitched his senior season, a season in which he was honored as an academic All-OAC first team selection.
Smith also gained valuable coaching experience coaching in the summer months in the Beach Collegiate Baseball League (BCBL) and the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL). He was the assistant coach for the Garden City Jackets of the BCBL in the summer of 2015 and coached in the NYCBL for two seasons as the hitting and third base coach of the Geneva Twins in 2014 and as the pitching coach for the Twins in 2013. In the summer of 2016, he will be the head coach of the Palmetto Generals of the BCBL. While coaching in the NYCBL, he has had eight players make the NYCBL All-Star Game and a player that is playing professionally in the Atlantic League.
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mount Union in physical education in 2012. He earned a master’s degree from Coker College in college athletic administration in 2015.
