GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Thiel College women's basketball team snapped its conference skid with a 77–65 victory over Franciscan on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Gymnasium in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The Tomcats picked up their first PAC win of the year and improved to 6–11 overall and 1–7 in the conference, while the Barons fell to 3–14 and 0–8 in league play.
Down seven with three minutes left in the first quarter, Thiel went on a 10-0 run led by Issy Green (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian).
Neck and neck in the second, Thiel was able to hold a lead the entire quarter to end up 35-32 at the half.
Thiel out-shot Franciscan 51.7% in the first half. Green went 4-6 from the field, 2-2 from the three-point range, dropped 11 points and seven assists.
Another back and forth third quarter, Thiel went 6-for-16 from the field, as Franciscan shot 7-for-19, giving Thiel only a two-point lead heading into the fourth.
The Tomcats were able to pull away with three minutes remaining in the game due to two steals by Caitlin Stephens (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) and one by Emily Betsinger (Indiana, Pa./Indiana).
The Barons fell into foul trouble to try to regain possession, but it was not enough to break the Thiel's lead.
Betsinger led Thiel's offense with 22 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) dropped 17 while grabbing four steals and rebounds.
Green broke Thiel's single assist game record by dishing out 16 and picking up her second double-double of the season by putting up 14 points.
Stephens put up 10 points and tied Betsinger with a game-high nine rebounds.
Overall, Thiel shot 50% from the floor and connected on 43% of threes, out shooting Franciscan across the board.
Thiel is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 28 to host the Westminster Titans at 5:30 p.m.
