Women's Volleyball falls at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 26) -- The Thiel College Women's Volleyball team fell 3-1 at Washington & Jefferson College Friday evening from Salvitti Family Gymnasium, ending the Blue and Gold's three-match Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) winning streak to start the season.

The Tomcats fall to 8-4 (3-1) while the Presidents rise to 8-7 (3-1) with set score wins of 25-21, 13-25, 27-25 and 25-14.

Set two was knotted at 10 before back-to-back Kylee Jordan (Orrville, Ohio/Waynedale) aces spearheaded a 6-0 run that grew into a 13-1 spurt that put the Tomcats ahead 23-11. Daisy Jenness (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton) had four kills in the run while Arin DeLattre (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) had a kill and ace each. Consecutive Jenness kills gave Thiel the set to even the match at one.

Jenness had a match-best 20 kills on a contest-leading 66 swings while hitting .121. She added 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Jenness has posted at least 10 kills in five straight matches and 9-of-11 on the season while eclipsing 20 kills twice.

DeLattre totaled 9 kills on .263 and a team-best six blocks to go with a pair of aces. Jordan finished with three kills and digs each to go with two aces.

Thiel jumped to a 6-1 lead in set three on a Carlie Reynolds (Grove City, Pa./Grove City Area) dump. The home side tallied 7 straight to pull ahead 9-7. After six consecutive sideouts put W&J ahead 18-16, a 5-0 Thiel run that featured a pair of blocks from DeLattre and Lyndzee Amory (Edinboro, Pa./Saegertown) along with DeLattre and Jordan put Thiel up 21-18. Trailing 23-20, the Presidents notched the next 4 points to lead 24-23. Thiel saved 2 set points, but the home side pulled out the set to lead 2-1.

Reynolds led Thiel with 35 assists while serving a match-high-tying three aces. She added nine digs to run her career total to 997 as she aims to become just the third player in team history to total 1,000 career assists and digs.

Amory had seven kills and three blocks from the right side. Caitlin Stephens (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) added five kills on .286 from the middle.

Thiel led 9-8 in set four before a 7-0 W&J run made it 15-9. Thiel got 2 back to make it 15-11, but the Presidents closed with a 10-3 spurt to take the set and match.

Danielle Aulet (Lawrence, Kan./Mineral Ridge) paced Thiel's defense with 24 digs. Sarah Wilson (Rural Valley, Pa./West Shamokin) added seven digs while Alex Ball (Clymer, Pa./Indiana Area) had six. W&J held a narrow edge in digs (64-62) while each side had eight total blocks (16 BA).

The Tomcats totaled eight aces, but W&J finished with 12.

Thiel returns to action next Wednesday against Hiram from Maenpa Court at 7 p.m.
