GREENVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 27) -- The Thiel College Football team fell 45-14 to Waynesburg University Saturday evening of Homecoming weekend in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action from Alumni Stadium at Stoeber Field.
The Tomcats slip to 0-4 (0-2) while the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-2 (2-0).
The visitors opened the game with a 5-play, 46-yard TD drive to lead 7-0. Looking to extend the lead, Waynesburg was picked off near midfield by
Basiaka Butcher (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) who returned it to the Waynesburg 18 with 3 minutes left in the opening quarter. The Tomcats capitalized on the turnover as
Deon Logan (Richmond, Va./James River) ran in for a 7-yard score to knot the game at 7.
The Jackets went on to outscore the Tomcats 17-0 in the second quarter and converted a 7-play, 92-yard drive in the third quarter to lead 31-7 with 5:40 on the clock.
On the ensuing drive, Logan broke free up the left side of the field for a program-record 85-yard touchdown run to make it 31-14.
Logan's record-long run broke Bob Leuschen's 44-year program-record run of 83 yards at Case Western Reserve on Sept. 26, 1981.
Logan totaled a season-best 146 yards on the ground on 16 carries to go with two touchdowns. He averaged 9.1 yards per carry in the matchup.
Logan has totaled over 100 yards in 3-of-4 lifetime matchups with Waynesburg. He ran for a career-best 148 yards in last seasons clash.
Thiel forced a three and out on the next possession as
Robert Dixie (Youngstown, Ohio/Woodridge) had a pass breakup on a deep ball down the left sideline, but the Tomcats were unable to make a heroic comeback as the Yellow Jackets went on for the 45-14 victory.
Dixie finished with seven tackles (six solo) and one pass breakup.
Devin Long (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) made a career-best 13 tackles (nine solo) with a tackle for loss and one forced fumble. Long has totaled 25 tackles in the Tomcats pair of home game on the season.
Joshua Daniel (Pompano Beach, Fla./Blanche Ely) finished with six tackles (five solo) and one forced fumble while
Elias Lawson (New Castle, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) had five stops (three solo), 1.5 TFL's and 0.5 sacks.
Jake Badger (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area) had 1.0 TFL while
Shane Myers (Sharon, Pa./Greenville) totaled a half sack and TFL each.
Offensively,
Joseph Fell (Warren, Ohio/Champion) got the start at quarterback and went 4-of-14 for 20 yards while running for 36 yards on 10 carries with a long of 15.
Keller Herzberger (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake Senior) completed 5-of-11 passes for 34 yards.
Adam Kreais (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell - Loudon) and
Ja'mani Morales (Ocala, Fla./Lake Weir) each had two grabs for 10 yards while
Riley Dunbar (Lyons, Ohio/Evergreen) had one catch for 12 yards.
The Tomcats are idle in week 5, but will return to Alumni Stadium Oct. 11 against Geneva at noon for the 2005 PAC championship team 20th-year reunion.
