GREENVILLE, Pa. (July 14) -- The inaugural Tomcat Tennis Tournament sponsored in partnership with First National Bank was held this past weekend at Tomcat Tennis Courts on the campus of Thiel College. The event brought together a competitive field of junior players from across the region and beyond, delivering high-quality tennis and strong community support throughout the weekend.
The Boys 18 & Under division was a four-player round robin. Caleb Tober (New Braunfels, Texas) was the top finisher in the group with a 3-0 mark as he went an unblemished 6-0 in sets and dropped just three games in the tournament. Samuel Campman (Greenville, Pa.) finished second in the group with a 2-1 record.
The Girls 18 & Under title went to Kayla Bussard (Amherst, Ohio), who defeated Madelynn Miller (Canfield, Ohio) by a score of 6-2, 6-3 in a steady and well-executed final.
In the Girls 16 & Under bracket, Mollie Schlichter (Cheswick, Pa.) claimed the championship with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Clara Drahnak (Glenshaw, Pa.). Interestingly enough, despite living just 15 minutes apart, the two had never met on court before this tournament.
The Boys 16 & Under division saw Evan Wong (Shaker Heights, Ohio) take home the trophy with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Arjun Balasundaram (Solon, Ohio) in the final.
Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach Anthony Kobak praised the success of the first-of-its-kind event in the area.
"The level of sportsmanship and talent displayed throughout the event was amazing to see," Kobak said. "I want to thank all the participants and families as well as First National Bank for helping make the tournament a great success."
Plans are already in motion for next year's edition as Thiel College continues to promote youth tennis in the region.
