NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 29) -- The No. 5 Thiel College Women's Lacrosse team fell in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Quarterfinals to No. 4 Westminster College 17-8 Tuesday evening at UPMC Sports Complex.
The Tomcats conclude the season with a program-record-tying 11 wins while the Titans advance to the semifinals to take on No. 1 Grove City Thursday.
The home side jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before
Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) netted her first goal of the game at the 1:30 mark on a free-position attempt to make it 3-1.
Madison Liggett (Baltimore, Md./Catholic) collected a pair of saves, one of which came on a free-poistion attempt, in the final minute of the first quarter to keep it a two-goal game.
Jade Mazzoni (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) struck 48 seconds into the second quarter to make it 3-2. The Titans outscored the Tomcats 7-2 in the rest of the quarter to take a 10-4 lead into the intermission. Ashlyn and
Hayden Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each scored in the second for the Blue and Gold.
The Tomcats got the first two goals of the third quarter as
Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and Mazzoni each scored to make it 10-6 and get the visitors back into the game. The home side went on to outscore Thiel 7-2 the rest of the way en route to the win.
Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) concludes the season with program records in goals (113) and points (134). She ends her career as the program career record holder in points (439) and goals (387). She netted four goals and dished out one assist in the season-ending loss.
Liggett concludes her career as the program record holder for career saves with 527. She stopped a single-season program record 182 shots this season. For the game, she made 15 saves for her 10th double-digit save effort of the season. Liggett had a game-best six ground balls.
Mazzoni ends her stellar freshman campaign with 27 goals and 32 points. She posted three goals for the game.
Hayden Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) finished with a goal and an assist in the loss and concludes the season with 21 goals and seven helpers.
Skylar Garlick (Fort Loudon, Pa./James Buchanan) logged one assist to finish with 25 on the year. She notched 27 goals on the season.
Aidrianna Green (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) caused a game-high-tying three turnovers.
